The informant, Arpaio claimed, had already reported the alleged abuse to a Mesa Police lieutenant who allegedly said, “This isn't the Mesa Police's problem. It's the cleaning company's issue.”
Arpaio's comment: “When you're talking about felony violations, I think that's a law-enforcement problem.” At least 30 Sheriff's deputies and 30 posse members served search warrants at Mesa City Hall and the Mesa Public Library overnight in their search for illegal immigrants using phony identification.
Although only three people were arrested at the site, 16 workers of Management Cleaning Controls, including a manager, were arrested, according to Arpaio. Ten were arrested on suspicion of identity theft and six for potentially being in the country illegally.
Deputies are looking for 15 more company employees. The investigation could later lead to civil complaints tied to violations of the employer-sanctions law.
Arpaio said that a sheriff's undercover detective infiltrated the business, claiming to be an undocumented immigrant and was schooled by a manager in how to obtain false identification that would get him past federal identification verification software.
