Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Thursday that his early morning raid on the Mesa Public Library came after a former Mesa city employee called his illegal immigration hotline to report that a cleaning company under contract with the city was hiring illegal immigrants.

The informant, Arpaio claimed, had already reported the alleged abuse to a Mesa Police lieutenant who allegedly said, “This isn't the Mesa Police's problem. It's the cleaning company's issue.”

Arpaio's comment: “When you're talking about felony violations, I think that's a law-enforcement problem.” At least 30 Sheriff's deputies and 30 posse members served search warrants at Mesa City Hall and the Mesa Public Library overnight in their search for illegal immigrants using phony identification.

Although only three people were arrested at the site, 16 workers of Management Cleaning Controls, including a manager, were arrested, according to Arpaio. Ten were arrested on suspicion of identity theft and six for potentially being in the country illegally.

Deputies are looking for 15 more company employees. The investigation could later lead to civil complaints tied to violations of the employer-sanctions law.

Arpaio said that a sheriff's undercover detective infiltrated the business, claiming to be an undocumented immigrant and was schooled by a manager in how to obtain false identification that would get him past federal identification verification software.

Could we borrow this Sheriff and his merry men for a few years, as I like his style. He could move a few of our Illegals that sneak into the UK. At the moment we have the Politicians that wear blinkers, and deaf ears to our problems and it gets worse by the day.As we move into a depression like the USA at the moment there will be more of our own people getting help from the Government but at least they have worked for it, and that is providing there is some money left in the kitty.

Not shocked at all. Mesa is very Illegal alien friendly. The fact that voters have passed many initiatives to stop illegal alien hiring and prevent them from getting benefits; and fining businesses that employ illegals is what is shocking me. Go Joe, Saban will not do what needs to be done. Even if no one agrees with all of Joe's tactics, you will have to admit, he does his job by preventing crime and curb illegal invasions.

I think it's bogus and the numbers are probably not accurate! Sheriff Joe Arpaio is under the FBI's microscope right now for abusing his power, racial profiling and costing the counties tax payers Millions for all the law suits against him ($42M and counting) google it! So how can we believe what they are saying especially when the Arizona Country Attorney "Andrew Thomas" backs him up and has very good ties with the media. Andrew Thomas! the same guy that invented "Latin America-Style Violence" for ONE incident that happened in Phoenix. Joe Arpaio's numbers on these raids have also been reported to be UNCLEAR!!!! and more violent crime has been reported after the raids. Hmmmm!

Impact of Arpaio's crime sweeps is unclear

The impact of the sweeps on crime is less clear. The sheriff's goal for the sweeps is to improve public safety and suppress crime, plus drive out illegal immigrants.

In four of five smaller areas where sweeps occurred, calls for assistance increased or were relatively flat right after the raid compared with the same period a year earlier. In the other area, they declined.

In neighborhoods of north and east Phoenix, data show that total violent crimes rose after deputies conducted saturation raids. In Fountain Hills, sheriff's statistics show deputies dealt with more major crimes this June than they did in June 2007, yet fewer overall crimes

I don't know if anyone has noticed the add to the right. I just opened the question, and there was an add for the Mesa cleaning co. there.

Edit: By the way, thanks Joe, good look out.

Now that is what local cops should be doing across the country. You don't wait for ICE. The local cops are the first responders and then they turn them over to ICE.
