Hi,

I'm an Indian National, working here in Canada on Work Permit for the past 8 months. I've just applied for WP renewal also.

(1) Can I apply for permanent residence in Canada now? Or do i have to wait for 4 months and then apply when i complete an year in Canada?
(2) Can i apply for permanent residence while in canada? How long it might take if applying from inside canada?
(3) While permanent residence is in progress, If i get married, can I apply for the sponsorship of my wife?

Thanks,
Roy

1. You must complete one year of residence first. You have only been in Canada 8 months so you must wait 4 more months.

2. Yes, you can apply from within Canada. It will take on average one to two years for completion.

3. No. You can only apply for a family member once you have permanent resident status. You can not apply while you are in progress.

It depends on what kind of work permit you have what you can apply for. Find out if you qualify for a provincial nominee program where you live and you might be able to apply right away through that. Their PR is fairly fast, under a year. Otherwise if you apply as a skilled worker from inside Canada your application is sent through the US and average should take 19 months.

It is possible to add a spouse to your application but it's kind of a hassle. Better if you marry before you apply or wait until after your application is through.

I beleive you will need to be working in Canada for 3 to 5 years before you are eligible to apply for PR.

see the link below for details.

This application is for persons who are in Canada on a valid temporary resident permit and wish to apply for permanent residence. Applicants must have lived continuously in Canada as permit holders for a minimum of three to five years (depending on the reason the applicant is inadmissible to Canada under the Act) before they are eligible to apply for permanent residence.
