National Guard force is up to full strength at state border with Mexico
The National Guard has completed its deployment of more than 500 troops in support of border security agencies along the Arizona-Mexico border.
The deployment, known as Operation Copper Cactus, was initiated on Aug. 30 and had set a deadline to complete deployment by Oct. 1.
A total of 560 guardsmen will act in supportive roles to U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
“They’re putting us where they need us,” said Sgt. Ed Balaban of the Arizona National Guard public affairs office.
The majority of the guardsmen will be assisting Border Patrol agents as part of entry identification teams positioned between ports of entry in the Tucson Sector, according to a news release announcing the completion of the deployment.
