HOW CAN I RENOUNCE MY IRANIAN CITIZENSHIP?

I hold Iranian citizenship and American citizenship. I want to visit my family in Iran and just go for a holiday in general, but I am afraid to do this because I might be abducted by the government for "military duty" (I am 18 and all males 18+ are eligible for military service). But I don't want to do this and I haven't lived in Iran since I was 2 years old! I want to renounce my Iranian citizenship since I have no intention of settling in Iran and I don't need it. I don't know who to contact because apparently there is no official Iranian embassy in the US. Do I have to go to Canada for this? (Which is not an issue since I live close to the Canada border)

Help!! I just want to see my family and this military duty might prevent be from ever going there!

Have you ever wondered why the United States doesn't prohibit multiple citizenship? Why doesn't the US require anybody who wants to naturalize in the United States, to become a US citizen, to renounce their "old" citizenship as part of the process, as it's the case in other countries (Norway, Germany, Austria, China, Japan, etc.)?



Because it's impossible or near impossible in some countries. Iran is one of them. They'll only allow you to shed your Iranian citizenship after you served in their military, and even then they would arrest you as an American under the pretense of being a traitor to your people and your former country.



And for what it's worth, if you were to serve in the Iranian military, you'd be prosecuted for treason in the United States upon your return. That's the big disadvantage if you are a citizen of two countries who are at "war" with on another.



I suggest you and your family meet in Turkey.

Even if you somehow are able to renounce citizenship, you'll be the next American citizen in an Iranian jail for an unknown amount of time, if you are unwary enough to set foot in Iran.
