1. As I know most British try to tolerate recent immigrants, they are not happy about them. They are afraid of losing their identity and they think of immigrants as not equal to the citizens.

2. I don't know when the Polish started migrating or which wave of migration you mean but after they became EU members in 2004, they were granted free entry so since then, there have been many of them migrating to the UK. Why? Because of higher wages and better circumstances. Most of them don't want to stay there. They just want to work there for a couple years then they go back to their country when they save up enough money.

3. Positive outcomes: - multiculturalism - colorful life among different people and languages

- opportunities for people to experience and have better circumstances.

- language learning opportunities for the immigrants

- UK companies pay lower wages to immigrants compared to citizens

Negative outcomes: - frustration - UK citizens feel that immigrants are taking their jobs and even more than that.

- higher unemployment rate

- higher crime rates

- growing population: it can become unsustainable sooner or later.

- the loss of national identity: this does not happen entirely but most citizens are afraid of it.

4. It depends on the country's policy what will happen in the future but it seems like this high volume of immigration cannot be maintained in the long run so it seems like there will be more restrictions especially toward immigrants outside the EU.

I understand Darren's concern and frustration. I think there is a reason why UK citizens don't want more immigrants in their country. I'm not from the UK and I don't even live there but immigrants can cause so much trouble everywhere. The UK has been in a terrible situation lately because it has to accept immigrants LEGALLY from many countries. It has to take responsibility for its former colonies as well as the EU member states. Unlike in the US, their "enemies" are mostly legal immigrants and that means that cannot even deport them or take any action against them. It must be really annoying to know non-citizens who are not even relatives of UK citizens take everything away. If you go to the States, for example, it is not that you can take all the benefits as an immigrant while in the UK, they are entitled to many benefits even if they only spend some months over there...

1) Migration is an essential part of Britains current economic policy. Without the stimulation to the economy that immigration brings, it would be in even worse shape.

2) Around the time Poland was admitted into the EU, but there were some conditions on their entry at the beginning.

3) By far the greatest drain on the health, education and other social services in the UK is the GBP 800 million housing and disability benefit cheats costs each year. Or the GBP 1.9 billion that the government lost to "errors". And what about the grey emigration away from UK - where retirees receive state pensions to live in Spain, USA, South Africa? Thats benefit money that doesn't even stay in the UK economy! Or the massive tax avoidance by the investment bankers in the city. Proportionally these drains are far greater amongst the native British. If you look at the NET contribution made by migrants in taxes, national insurance contributions it far outweighs any negatives.

4) With an ageing population and weak birth rates the UK needs migration in order to bolster its economy. Otherwise there will be more people reliant on the state and not enough people contributing taxes to support it. Its basically the complete opposite of the bigotry and ignorance the Sun or the Daily Mail spout.
