My wife and I have a possible job proposal in the US in the very near future and we are looking to moving there from Australia. I'm confused however, as to what websites I should be looking at for information, and how and where I will apply for a working visa. I'm also needing to know what is required of us to get a working visa, and how long does it last. Any information from anyone who has moved to the US as an Australian would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot apply for an employment visa. Only employers can apply for employment visas. If you are hired, the employer will have to apply for the visa. You will have to provide the documentation to prove you are qualified. E.g. if your company applies for an H1-b visa, you have to provide your degree/diploma, college transcripts, proof of at least 2 years post-baccalaureate experience, etc.

Employment visas vary, but the H1-b visa (the most popular one) would be valid for a maximum of 3 years, with the possibility of the employer renewing it for a maximum of 3 more years, for a maximum total of 6 years. Other types of employment visas may be good, for example, for only one year. Which type of visa you qualify for depends on your education and qualifications, but generally, you must have at least a university degree plus experience in a field where there is a documented shortage of American workers.

There are hardly any jobs at all these days where there is a shortage of qualified Americans since there are millions of people who have lost their jobs in the past year. This makes it tough for employers to obtain labor certification from the US Dept of Labor, which is a prerequisite to applying for an employment visa.

You can apply for the special "Work and Holiday" visa. You just have to be between the ages of 18 and 30.

I suggest that you contact the nearest US Embassy in Australia. They are the starting point all immigration procedures, including work visas.

The US Embassy will be able to provide the proper forms and instructions for executing the forms, and provide information regarding qualifications and requirements for visas.

Workers visa is US employer's petition. Your employer has to file petition first and get approved. With the approval of petition, you can apply for the visa.

O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet

Whose stern impassioned stress

A thoroughfare of freedom beat

Across the wilderness!

America! America!

God mend thine every flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self-control,

Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved

In liberating strife.

Who more than self their country loved

And mercy more than life!

America! America!

May God thy gold refine

Till all success be nobleness

And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream

That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam

Undimmed by human tears!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the enameled plain!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

Till souls wax fair as earth and air

And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,

Whose stem impassioned stress

A thoroughfare for freedom beat

Across the wilderness!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

Till paths be wrought through

wilds of thought

By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale

Of liberating strife

When once and twice,

for man's avail

Men lavished precious life!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

Till selfish gain no longer stain

The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream

That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam

Undimmed by human tears!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

Till nobler men keep once again

Thy whiter jubilee!
