Question:
Can I become a US Citizen if...?

I'm trying to become a US Citizen. I was born in Mexico and have been a legal resident now for eight years. I heard somewhere that to become a US Citizen, you have to have joined the Army Reserve. I didn't join because I'm a pacifist. I didn't want to be drafted into the Army. Plus, I'm Christian, and I don't want to kill a man in battle. "Thou shalt not kill" is a commandment, you know. I'm still not enlisted in the Army Reserve. Can I become a Citizen or not? Will I need a lawyer to work on my case if I'm rejected? Thanks in advance.

If you did not sign up for the selective service, then yes, your citizenship can be denied.

It is a requirement that all males age 18-25 sign up for the selective service. This applies to citizens, legal residents and even illegal aliens.

Signing up does not mean you will ever serve a day in the military,we do not have the draft.

If you haven't signed up and are under the age of 25,I suggest you do so to prevent complications with your citizenship application. You can get the form at the post office to sign up.

If your a legal resident then you don't need to join the army. You just need to apply the proper paper works. Since you've been a legal resident for 5 years. BUT you must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma.

You do not have to sign up for the army reserve, you must sign up for the selective service. Every male over 18 must sign up (if they are a citizen). Basically its in case of a draft (very unlikely). I believe after age 25 (as the law stands now) you cannot be drafted. Every single male born in US right now is likely registered automatically for the selective service. Hope this helps. Apply for your Citizenship and good luck!

It was/is your responsibility to register for selective service.

If you want to be a citizen of this great country, if called, you should be willing to fight for the freedoms we have.

If you were drafted, because of your being a pacifist, you could be assigned a cushy desk job.

Hopefully by your unwillingness to sign up, your citizenship will be denied.
