i want to stay outside of the US for a while, but i dont like my immigration status be affected.

YOU CAN STAY FOR 1 YEAR IF YOU HAVE GREEN CARD YOU CAN ALSO FILE FOR A 2 YEAR PERMISSION TO STAY OUT OF USA WITH USCIS. YOU CAN CHECK OUT USCIS.GOV SITE FOR MORE INFO ON FORMS & APPLICATIONS

I believe that so long as you are in the U.S. for at least 28 days in the year your are deemed to be in "residency" .....you may want to verify with USCIS since there may have been changes.....
