Best answer: 10 points...

I am travelling to Miami and onward to south America in 2013, I am British and have a British passport which is the most recent type (computer chip on the back page)

Do I need a visa to get into the USA even if I'll only be there for a few hours?

I went to America in 2010 and needed one, but I have been told that this has changed.

Also, will I get a stamp in my passport?

Thanks

seem at what Greg reported, and then opposite it. Mexicans and others south of Mexico must have a visa to enter the U.S. as visitors. electorate of Canada are exempt the visa requirement if the objective of the holiday is to visit. you're also exempt the passport requirement (at present) in case you enter through sea or land. in case you enter through air, you'll choose a passport. clearly, a citizen of Canada ought to satisfy another requirement of a bona fide client except for the visa and passport, and to be exempt the passport, you should latest documentation that shows you're a Canadian. also prefer to exhibit that you sufficient money to help your self in the course of your stay while not having to settle for employment, that you do not have a criminal heritage that would avert your admission, and that you've a overseas position of abode overseas to so that you could go back. once you've a passport, carry it. if you're planning to do more advantageous than visit, which includes study, there'll be different criteria.

The U.K. is part of the Visa Waiver Program. What that means is that a Brit doesn't need a visa for visits to the United States not exceeding 90 days in a row. If you needed a visa in 2010, that means you were not eligible to travel under the VWP. That happens if you either:

- overstayed your welcome on a previous visit,

- have applied for a visa before but got denied, or

- have been convicted of a crime.

If you intend to leave the airport in Miami, even for only a few hours, you will need a US visa. If you're just flying via Miami and won't leave the airport at all then you won't need a US visa.

There is a Visa Waiver Programme which may mean you don't need one.

Have a look at the FCO website
