In a way it is good as well as bad. I feel the government should put all those on the dole as well as other government assistance into an education program to fill the needs which we do not have--if half the people living off the government went into the workforce with an education provided by the government----the need for skilled immigration might be cut down.

Obviously the rate of employment for local people needs to be considered. But if there are skills shortages I think it's a great idea. Especially for areas outside of the large cities that are crying out for people. Obviously they bring their skills and fill a labor shortage but People from other countries can be really enriching to a community in other ways as they bring different food and ways of life. Just one example - I remember living in Brisbane Australia in the 1970's and the food options were so limited and boring. Now I live in Sydney and can eat all different types of foods from all around the world. I love it and would never want to go back!

Yes I do. We desperately need skilled workers and we can't train them fast enough to meet our current needs. We definitely shouldn't rely on skilled immigration as an easy way out and use the fact that we can easily get skilled workers from overseas instead of training our own people, but that takes time and the economy can't wait. Without skilled workers, our economy can't grow.

If they do, they need to screen properly. First Australians is an easy way to move terrorist into other countries. Also they need to make sure the immigrants are actually qualified. Too many third world countries have built diploma mills to help people immigrate to the first world. I have seen to many so called skilled immigrants who really don't even have an education equivallent to a High school education.

Its how the country was built.
If you need skilled people and you have no "home grown"availability, then the only answer is to import them.
